Friends of Ampère

The Ampère estate and museum are managed by the Société des Amis d’André-Marie Ampère (SAAMA), an association founded on June 12, 1930, at the initiative of Paul Janet of the Academy of Sciences, director of the École Supérieure d’Électricité.

The association's mission is to preserve and promote the memory of André-Marie Ampère.

Since 1936, the association has been officially recognized as a non-profit organization of public interest. Its first president was Louis Lumière, the inventor of the cinematograph.

The operation, maintenance, and development of the museum are made possible through visitor fees, memberships, donations, partnerships, and the work of the association’s volunteers.

Inaugurated in 1931, the Ampère Museum is (probably) the oldest associative museum in France.
